OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the company’s plans for upcoming GPT-4,5 and GPT-5 AI models, with a focus on a more unified and simplified AI experience. Altman shared these plans via a series of posts on X, emphasizing OpenAI’s goal of streamlining its product offerings and unifying its AI technologies.
OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5:
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.
We hate…

GPT-4,5
- Dubbed “Orion” during development, GPT-4,5 will be the last of OpenAI’s models to not use chain-of-thought reasoning. Chain-of-thought reasoning allows AI to solve tasks in a more logical, step-by-step manner, leading to more detailed answers.
GPT-5
- GPT-5 will integrate various OpenAI technologies, including o3 , in a unified system. The o3 model will no longer be available as a standalone model. The goal is to create a system that uses all of OpenAI's tools, determines when to engage in extended reasoning, and is useful for a wide range of tasks. GPT-5 is expected to feature a larger contextual window, take on more agentic tasks, and have multimodal capabilities.
Simplify the user experience
- OpenAI aims to make AI more accessible and intuitive. The company plans to remove the complexity of choosing between different models and create a “magical unified intelligence” that “just works” for users. Altman expressed his dislike for the current “model selection” system and aims to return to a more seamless experience.
Accessibility and Subscription Models for GPT-5
- GPT-5 will be accessible through a three-tier structure:
- Free to use: Unlimited access to the standard version of GPT-5.
- Plus subscribers: Access to a version with higher intelligence and expanded features, including voice, canvas, search and deep search capabilities.
- Client Area Pro : Using the most advanced version of GPT-5 with additional features and the highest available computing power.
Publication schedule
- While specific release dates were not provided, Altman said GPT-4,5 should be available in a few weeks, with GPT-5 expected to follow in a few months.
